Exploring Winchester's Treasures

Over six centuries since its foundation in 1382, Winchester College has accumulated thousands of historic documents, books and works of art. A beautifully-illustrated new publication, edited by Richard Foster (Keeper of Collections and Head of Art History), highlights 50 of the most interesting, unique and important objects from the school's collections. Each object is accompanied by an essay written by one of the school community, including pupils, staff, and members of the school’s governing body.

The book features artefacts from the early history of Winchester College, and outstanding items from its important collections of Greek antiquities, Chinese ceramics, English silver and rare books. Among the more unusual and unexpected items are a ship model made by eighteenth-century prisoners, a scrapbook from the Crimean War, and perhaps the world’s longest-running scientific experiment.
